Located along the picturesque Douro River near the village of Mosteiro is the Douro Royal Valley Hotel and Spa. It's stark white modern exterior of this hotel is almost space age. It is a hotel with a strong opinion on nature and wine. Driving in your options are to enter through a garage door or walkway that takes you to an elevator enclosed in its own courtyard. Most hotels have an open driveway or round about. The Douro Royal Valley has a door that blends in with the white walls. I felt like I was entering some sort off limits private estate. A walkway led me to a white door, where I rang a buzzer. On the other side was a large yet empty room with one elevator. For a moment I thought I was entering a secret outpost like the underlying’s of Area 51.
As I emerged out of the elevator and into the hotel lobby I was greeted by an amazing view from the floor to ceiling windows that face the river. A local refreshment of Port wine from the Douro awaited my pallet. After a tour of the property I settled in at the restaurant for a farm to table dinner of Porcini mushroom and goat cheese salad with arugula. Complemented with a raspberry dressing. My second course was a vegetable pasta with poached egg, paired with some amazing local wine from the Douro picked out by my waiter. Food and wine are a serious affair here, and I was waited on by a whole team of people. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they have a Michelin Star in the future.
After dinner I grabbed a drink in the lobby level piano bar. There were others playing pool and lounging in the plush chairs. On a warmer night you can sit outside on their enormous deck under the stars. It is certainly a very relaxing place.
It was unfortunate that my stay at the Douro would be so short. On my tour I got to experience their world class spa, designed with all the elements of the earth. It is fit with all the amenities you would want, steam room, whirlpool, cold plunge and a relaxation room with body contouring chairs overlooking the river. The outdoor pool had an infinity edge that made it appear you could swim right off the roof and into the Douro River. The edge of the pool also hides their solar array, which heats the pool.
Below the pool is an outdoor tennis court also with an amazing view of the river.
They have built everything here with one goal in mind. Enjoy the Douro River, get sucked into its beauty and immerse yourself with this natural wonder.
The Douro Royal Valley is all about simplicity and minimalism. They recycle river water for their non-guest needs, use solar power, are developing an on-site garden and even are opening a hospitality school on their upper floors. They work closely with all staff to make sure nothing is wasted from the rooms to the kitchen.
The modernism of this hotel won’t suite everyone, but it’s amazing location and amenities should. Its view and closeness to wine country can’t be beat. An added bonus is that you can even arrive by boat to the hotels private dock, which I highly recommend.
