I have been in Beijing a few days now, and i am excited to finally see the sun today. The last few weeks in Asia have been in a smog ridden haze. The Air reading well over 300 yesterday. Its Sunday here in Beijing so I believe some of the factories are closed and less cars are on the road as well as a swift breeze that seems to be blowing through the city. It boggles my mind that people believe China to be an emerging super power when they care so little about the importance of the world. This country is lawless with no traffic control and no order or respect. No one seems to obey traffic lights or avoid blocking intersections at rush hour. The spitting and smoking are out of control, I haven't been anywhere outside and not had a whiff of cigarette smoke.
Since the smog has cleared i can see that this was once a pretty city. A local told me that the smog has been bad since 2006 and that it is very rare to see the sun. The government does nothing that she could see to reduce or regulate the industries that create the smog problem. Even though during the 2008 Olympics they shut down factories and kicked out non residents from the city so there would not be smog for the Olympics.
It baffles me to know someone has a solution to a mass issue but prefers to not fix it.
